Indiranagar’s shareholders and the address problem

Indiranagar was built out as a residential layout for salaried professionals, including employees of the public sector undertakings and defence establishments clustered along the old airport road. That generation bought shares directly in public issues and held them on paper, in the name and at the address they had then.

Two things follow decades later. Houses were rebuilt, redeveloped or let, so the address on the folio is no longer where anyone lives. And the signature on record, set down in the 1980s, no longer matches the one the holder signs today. Either is enough to stop a dividend and, after seven unclaimed years, send the shares to the IEPF.

Correcting a folio, and what a family needs after a death

Where the shareholder is alive, this is usually paperwork rather than law: Form ISR-1 updates PAN, address, bank and contact details, and Form ISR-2 has your bank confirm your signature where it has changed. Once the folio is complete, unpaid dividends can be released and the shares dematerialised.

Karnataka is stricter than most states here. Bengaluru Urban district administration states that a legal heir certificate is now issued only to the family of a deceased government servant; everyone else is directed to obtain a succession certificate from the civil court with jurisdiction. Families in Bengaluru therefore reach the court stage sooner than families in, say, Uttar Pradesh or Haryana, where a tehsil-issued certificate is widely accepted.

  • Form ISR-1 with PAN, proof of address and a cancelled cheque in the holder’s name
  • Form ISR-2, attested by your bank, where the signature differs from the one on record
  • For a deceased holder: the death certificate, Form ISR-5, and an indemnity bond with NOCs from the other heirs, where the value is within SEBI’s limits
  • A Client Master List under two months old, attested by your depository participant

Questions from Indiranagar

The dividends stopped years ago. Are the shares lost?

Almost never. Unpaid dividends and the shares themselves may have been transferred to the IEPF after seven years, and both can be claimed back with Form IEPF-5. If the transfer has not happened yet, updating the folio releases the money.

My signature has changed since the 1980s. Is that a problem?

It is one of the most common reasons a request is returned, and it is fixable. Form ISR-2, in which your bank confirms your signature as it holds it, is what registrars accept.

The house in Indiranagar was sold. Which address do I give?

Your current one. The folio is updated to where you live now with Form ISR-1 and proof of address; the old address only matters as a way to identify the folio.

Do you handle shares of PSUs and older Bengaluru companies?

Yes, provided they are listed companies whose registrar still maintains the register. Send the company name and folio number and we will confirm what is recoverable before you engage us.

How long does it take?

A folio correction and demat is usually a matter of weeks. An IEPF claim depends on the company verifying it and the IEPF Authority processing it, which the rules allow 30 and 60 days for respectively, and it commonly takes longer.
